it has been a crazy last 6 weeks and that includes developments on evan’s speech issues!
at the end of may, we finally had our appt with the speech pathologist at texas children’s that serves on the palate team. when we had originally seen our ent about this {and his hearing}, he had referred evan to another specialist on a palate team in the med center who did a video study on him. basically, she thought that he had a shortened palate and he was diagnosed with VPI {velopharyngeal insufficiency}. the treatment recommended was to find a therapist who had experience with VPI and see if it could be corrected with therapy. if it wasn’t corrected by 6 or 7, we would then consider surgery to correct his palate. ummmm, scary!
being goofy waiting for his appt…
back to his appt at TCH. after an evaluation, this therapist told us, with full confidence, that evan does not have VPI. instead, he has something that presents itself similarly but is actually a “learned” behavior that is oftentimes a result of middle ear infections as a little one {and he definitely had that!}. what this means is that surgery is essentially off the table!! such a relief!
evan has been doing therapy through the school district for a little over a month now and has been making great progress! this summer, we are doing private therapy and he is making great strides there as well! here’s hoping this fixes the issue and the little man can avoid surgery! we are so thankful for such amazing professionals {and nanny} who have taken the time to walk us through all of this and helped us find the therapists the little man needs!
